On June 28, Congressman Kevin McCarthy, Representative of California’s 20th Congressional District and Speaker of the House, announced his appointment of Dr. Vip Dev to the Congressional Award Board, which designates the recipients of the Congressional Award for young Americans aged 14-23.
Speaker McCarthy released the following statement:
“As an esteemed medical professional with a distinguished career, Dr. Dev’s expertise and dedication will undoubtedly contribute to the Congressional Award Board’s ongoing efforts to recognize outstanding young Americans. His commitment to excellence in the surgery field, paired with his generous service to the Bakersfield community, aligns with the objectives of the Congressional Award program which aims to inspire personal development and community service in our youth. I am confident that his valuable insights will greatly enhance the selection process for this prestigious award.”
Background
According to 2 U.S.C. §802(a), the Congressional Award Board shall consist of 25 members, with six members appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, one of whom shall be a local Congressional Award program volunteer. The Congressional Award is Congress’ commendation for young Americans age 14-23 who achieve the goals they set as part of the program, promoting initiative, achievement, and excellence in one of four program areas. The Congressional Award Board sets the standards for each program, designates the recipients of the award, and organizes the awards ceremony with Members of Congress.
