Today, Congressman David Valadao (CA-22) joined the entire California Republican Congressional delegation in releasing a statement in response to Governor Newsom’s recent press conference. The governor announced his intention to challenge the independent redistricting commission’s authority, which was established by the VOTERS FIRST Act passed by California voters in 2010.
The statement from Congressman Valadao and his colleagues emphasized that the VOTERS FIRST Act granted the independent California Citizens Redistricting Commission exclusive control over drawing congressional districts. They criticized Governor Newsom and California Democrats for attempting to shift this power back to Sacramento politicians, accusing them of pursuing a political agenda.
The delegation highlighted that the Commission had incorporated feedback from tens of thousands of Californians about their communities of interest, shaping congressional districts that reflect local communities rather than party preferences. They argued that partisan gerrymandering contradicts the will of California voters as expressed through their support for the VOTERS FIRST Act.
The statement also pointed out that despite Republicans winning 38% of the statewide vote, they currently hold only nine out of 52 congressional seats. The delegation expressed concern over Governor Newsom and Sacramento’s decision to spend $200 million on a special election while facing a $20 billion deficit, viewing it as an effort to silence opposition.
Congressman Valadao and his fellow delegates pledged to oppose what they see as disenfranchisement efforts by any means necessary to ensure that redistricting reflects the will of California voters.
