Congressman David Valadao, representing California’s 22nd district, has taken steps to address energy costs in the Central Valley by sending a letter with fellow representatives Vince Fong, Doug LaMalfa, and Tom McClintock. The letter praises the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) decision to rescind a 2012 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM).
“Rescinding CalGem’s memorandum of understanding with BLM is a critical step toward restoring domestic oil production in the Central Valley,” Congressman Valadao stated. He emphasized that Kern County has suffered financially due to delays in permit issuance, resulting in lost revenue and jobs. “By getting rid of this unnecessary red tape, we can get production back on track, lower energy costs for Valley families, and bring much-needed investment back to our communities.”
Congressman Fong highlighted the importance of removing barriers to energy production. “This decision removes barriers to needed energy production, reduces costs for families, strengthens economic stability, and reaffirms our commitment to American energy dominance,” he said.
Congressman LaMalfa criticized state-level interference under Governor Newsom’s administration. “Under Governor Newsom, California has waged a war on oil production,” he remarked. He expressed gratitude towards Interior Secretary Doug Burgum for rescinding the MOU and enabling oil and gas operations on federal lands without state interference.
The BLM plays an essential role in managing oil production on federal land within California. Although BLM approves new drilling permits, CalGem requires an additional state-level permitting process not mandated by federal law. This situation has led to over 100 permits being delayed due to informal agreements rather than official policy changes.
