Congressman Vince Fong, who represents California’s 20th district, has been appointed to serve on the House Homeland Security Committee for the 119th Congress. The committee is responsible for addressing issues such as counterterrorism, emergency preparedness, cybersecurity, and threats related to illegal immigration and foreign adversaries.
In a statement following his appointment, Congressman Fong said, “I’m honored to have been selected to serve on the Homeland Security Committee. A secure California is critical to protecting our homeland. From our borders and ports to our cybersecurity and defense assets – we must make public safety a top priority and be ready to confront the ever-evolving threats facing our nation. I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Committee to advance policies that safeguard our communities, strengthen our preparedness, and ensure the security of the American people.”
Chairman Garbarino also commented on Fong’s appointment: “I am proud to welcome Congressman Fong to the Committee on Homeland Security. Throughout his years of service at the local, state, and federal levels of government, he has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to improving the lives of his constituents and the American people. His experience and perspective will strengthen our efforts to protect our supply chains, safeguard critical infrastructure, combat evolving threats in and out of cyberspace, and enhance public safety. I look forward to working alongside Congressman Fong to keep our homeland secure.”
The House Homeland Security Committee was established by Congress in 2002 following the September 11 attacks. Initially created as a select committee for oversight of the Department of Homeland Security’s development, it became a standing committee in January 2005.
The committee oversees areas including border security and enforcement; counterterrorism; intelligence; cybersecurity; infrastructure protection; emergency management; technology; investigations; accountability; special event security; transportation; and maritime security.
California is noted as both the most populous U.S. state and one of its largest economies globally. With extensive land and sea borders as well as significant critical infrastructure, California faces various risks from foreign adversaries, criminal organizations, terrorism, cybercrime, and natural disasters.
