Congressman Vince Fong (CA-20) has announced that he is withholding his congressional pay in response to the ongoing government shutdown. This decision comes as many federal employees, including air traffic controllers, border patrol agents, and military personnel, are not receiving their paychecks due to the closure.
Fong noted that it has been 35 days since he voted to keep the government open. He requested that his own pay be withheld in solidarity with federal workers who continue to work without compensation.
According to Fong, Senate Democrats have now voted twelve times against reopening the government. They also voted against S. 3012 – Shutdown Fairness Act, which aimed to provide pay for federal employees working during the shutdown.
“Yesterday, Senate Democrats voted for the 12th time to keep the government closed in addition to voting against S. 3012 – Shutdown Fairness Act, which would have paid these hardworking men and women while they work to keep us safe through this shutdown,” said Congressman Fong.
A video statement from Congressman Fong is available online.
