Cost of education increases for all California State University-Bakersfield students in 2022-23 school year

Tuition for California residents attending California State University-Bakersfield rose by 0.8% for the 2022-23 school year, based on the latest figures released, according to the latest disclosure from the National Center for Education Statistics.

California residents paid $7,637 to attend the four-year public university this year, an increase of $58 from the $7,579 charged during the 2021-22 academic year.

Non-resident students were charged 155.6% more than in-state students in 2022-23, paying $19,517. This amount reflects a 0.3% increase from $19,459 in the previous year.

Approximately 96% of the undergraduate student body consists of California residents. Students from other states make up about 1%, while international students account for 2%.

Data indicates that 91% of full-time undergraduates who began studies at California State University-Bakersfield in 2022-23 received some form of financial aid. A total of 955 students were awarded grants or scholarships amounting to $11.9 million, and 205 students obtained student loans exceeding $959,839.

Across the entire undergraduate population, 6,772 students received grants or scholarships totaling $76 million. Additionally, 2,057 students borrowed $13.6 million in federal student loans.

Undergraduate education costs have seen a significant increase over the past few decades. Data shows a 169% rise in the average total cost, including tuition, fees, room, and board, between 1980 and 2020.

According to a 2023 College Board report, in-state students at public universities paid an average of $11,260, while out-of-state students paid $29,150 in the 2023-24 academic year.

Meanwhile, student loan debt has steadily increased over the last 30 years, reaching $1.75 trillion in 2024, averaging a total of $28,950 per borrower. Federal loans make up 92% of the debt, with over half of students at both public and private four-year colleges graduating with student loans.
