Today, the House of Representatives passed a bill introduced by Congressman David Valadao (CA-22), identified as H.R. 1044. This legislation aims to authorize seven permit renewals for the Kaweah Hydroelectric Project located in Tulare County, California. The current permit is due to expire in 2026.
Congressman Valadao emphasized the importance of the project, stating: “The Kaweah Hydroelectric Project is a critical source of clean, reliable, and affordable energy for California, and these permit renewals are the key to keeping it running.” He warned that without authorization, ratepayers in CA-22 would face increased energy costs and potential infrastructure dismantling expenses.
Valadao addressed his colleagues on the House Floor during discussions about the bill. In his remarks, he urged support for H.R. 1044: “I rise to urge support for my bill, H.R. 1044,” he said.
Southern California Edison has managed the project since 1899. It relies on federal land usage authorized by Congress through permits since 1912. The most recent extensions were granted in 2005 but will expire in 2026 unless further action is taken.
Without renewal of these permits, Southern California Edison would need to remove essential infrastructure at significant cost—an expense that would impact ratepayers across California.
Valadao expressed gratitude towards Chairman Westerman and others involved with the Committee on Natural Resources for their efforts regarding this matter.
