The House Appropriations Legislative Branch Subcommittee convened today to discuss the Fiscal Year 2026 bill, which was approved by the subcommittee under the leadership of Congressman David Valadao. As chairman, Valadao expressed his commitment to fiscal responsibility and transparency in congressional operations. “This legislation reins in unnecessary spending, focuses on core needs, and ensures that every dollar is justified and accountable to the American people,” he stated.
Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole highlighted the bill’s focus on service to Americans through targeted investments. “It supports functions core to democracy and upholds the oversight and accountability duties of Congress,” Cole said.
Valadao began the markup with an introduction of the FY26 Legislative Branch Appropriation bill, acknowledging input from subcommittee members, including Ranking Member Espaillat. The proposed budget stands at $5 billion, a decrease of 5.3 percent from FY25 levels. Emphasizing security concerns following recent events in Minnesota, Valadao underscored the importance of safety for Congress members and visitors.
The bill proposes increased funding for security measures, including support for the House Sergeant at Arms and United States Capitol Police. It also maintains an increase in Members’ Representational Allowance initiated in 2017 for member security outside Capitol grounds.
Valadao noted ongoing developments by the House Sergeant at Arms regarding additional security proposals, which will be reviewed collaboratively with Senate counterparts as part of future discussions.
In closing remarks, Valadao thanked committee members and staff for their contributions to shaping this legislative proposal.
