The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Sharon Cristina Cruz-Wences, a Mexican national convicted of selling a person for immoral purposes in Bakersfield, California.

DHS said Cruz-Wences was among individuals arrested during an operation targeting people the agency described as “criminal illegal aliens.” The department said Cruz-Wences had been convicted of selling a person for an immoral purpose.

The arrest was included in a DHS announcement about ICE operations involving people with convictions for murder, sexual offenses, robbery, and other crimes. DHS described the enforcement effort as part of its “Worst of the Worst” operation focused on public safety.

DHS said there were 33,179 active ICE detainers for people it described as “criminal illegal aliens” in California custody. The department also said 4,561 people had been released from jails in California since Jan. 20 despite immigration detainer requests.

ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations identifies, arrests, and removes noncitizens who are subject to removal from the United States. The agency says ERO also manages detained and non-detained cases and works with federal, state, and local law enforcement partners.

The Department of Homeland Security says U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is responsible for immigration enforcement and related federal law enforcement activities through offices across the country.
