Congressman David Valadao has reintroduced the Modernizing All Veterans and Survivors Claims Processing Act, aiming to improve the efficiency of benefit claims processing at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The bill seeks to standardize software used by the VA for handling claims, with a focus on streamlining processes to ensure veterans and survivors receive their entitled benefits without undue delay.
Valadao emphasized the importance of timely benefits for veterans who have served the country. “Our veterans have made great sacrifices fighting for our freedom, and when they return home, they shouldn’t be waiting months to receive their benefits because of outdated technology at the VA,” he stated. He expressed pride in reintroducing the legislation, which aims to enhance automation tools in processing VA claims.
The proposed act outlines several requirements for the VA:
– Develop a plan to incorporate automation tools for claims processing, facilitate information sharing between federal agencies, and generate correspondence for various VA program offices.
– Implement an automated letter-drafting tool specifically for offices handling veterans’ pension claims and survivors’ benefits claims.
– Establish policies and technological capabilities ensuring that updates regarding school-age children receiving benefits are automatically reflected in both VBA’s Compensation Service and Education Service systems.
– Ensure accurate labeling of documents within VA’s electronic claims processing system using AI technology.
The background provided highlights that while AI tools have been employed by the VA to expedite disability claims through drafting letters and document collection, these technologies have not been applied to other types of claims such as pensions or survivors’ benefits. This gap results in significant delays. Additionally, issues with mislabeled documents in the electronic system further hinder timely claim resolutions.
