CSUB accepting applications for U.S. Congress internship

Announcement

California State University, Bakersfield is accepting student applications for a semester-long internship in Washington, D.C.

The Congressional Internship Program, provided by the Panetta Institute for Public Policy at CSU Monterey Bay, is available to one student from each CSU campus during the fall semester. The program begins on Aug. 7 and lasts through Dec. 5.

Students will be working for a member of Congress, attending seminars and more, all while earning class credit. During their participation in the program, students will receive a stipend to cover living expenses.

The goal of the program is to give students a firsthand experience of the American political progress and practical work experience.

Students will spend the first two weeks of their internship training at the Panetta Institute, after which they will be sent to Washington, D.C. for 11 weeks to work full-time for members of the U.S. House of Representatives, handling tasks such as answering phones, drafting correspondence, attending meetings and doing data entry.

Upon returning to California on Nov. 5, they will have a month to complete the academic requirements of the program, which includes a 20-page policy paper and a 20-page reflection journal.

This opportunity is open to students from all majors across the campus and there is no income limit. To be eligible, a student must meet several criteria, including currently being a sophomore or junior, a California resident, U.S. citizen, academically outstanding and able to demonstrate an interest in public service.

Applications will be accepted through 2 p.m. on Monday, April 11. Applicants should send an email with the following attachments to Christina Ochoa at cochoa@csub.edu:

  • A two-page statement on why they want the internship, how it will benefit them and why they are interested in public service
  • An official university transcript
  • A rèsumè
  • A graded course paper that demonstrates their writing ability

A committee will review applications and forward a recommendation to President Lynnette Zelezny, who will select a student to recommend to the Panetta Institute.
