On June 9, 2022 at 5:07 p.m., Kern County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to an armed robbery of the Rite Aid located on China Grade Loop. It was reported that an elderly male had entered the store and approached the pharmacy counter with a handgun in his waistband and demanded morphine. He threatened to shoot the employees, who complied and gave him morphine. He also stole cash from the cash register and left the store. No one was injured.
A customer in the store witnessed the robbery and saw the suspect leave the scene in the back of a taxicab. The witness followed the cab and directed deputies to where he was dropped off at a nearby bus bench. Deputies arrested him without incident for armed robbery. The gun was discovered to be a BB gun. The loss was recovered.
