Johnny Callison, born March 12, 1939

Born in Qualls, Oklahoma, on March 12, 1939, Johnny Callison’s life took a turn when his family settled in Bakersfield, California, seeking a better life during World War II. From poverty, Callison discovered his athletic prowess, especially excelling in baseball at East Bakersfield High School. Signed by the White Sox in 1957, he embarked on a 16-year major-league career, ultimately finding his stride with the Phillies from 1960 to 1969. Callison’s remarkable achievements included a breakthrough season in 1962 and a stellar performance in the ill-fated 1964 season. Despite a decline post-1965, he left an indelible mark in Phillies’ records. After retirement, Callison faced health challenges until his death on October 12, 2006, at the age of 67. His legacy endures as a beloved figure in Philadelphia’s baseball history.
