Died: October 12, 2006 - Johnny Callison's

Johnny Callison, born in Qualls, Oklahoma, on March 12, 1939, found refuge in baseball as a way to escape poverty. A star athlete at East Bakersfield High School, he joined the Chicago White Sox in 1957 before flourishing with the Philadelphia Phillies from 1960 to 1969. Callison's exceptional skills and breakthrough season in 1962 made him a premier player, known for his cannon-like throwing arm and mastery of right field. Despite a career marked by what-ifs, his 1964 season was a standout, narrowly missing the MVP due to the Phillies' pennant collapse. Traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1970, he faced challenges under manager Leo Durocher. Callison, a three-time All-Star, retired in 1973. After a varied post-baseball career, he battled health issues and passed away on October 12, 2006, in Bakersfield, California, leaving a lasting impact on Phillies history.
