Sam Houston Andrew III, born in Taft, California, was a versatile American musician, singer, songwriter, and composer. As the founding member and guitarist of Big Brother and the Holding Company, he contributed to three platinum albums and two hit singles. Born into a military family, Andrew's early life involved frequent moves, cultivating his musical talent from a young age. Notably, he formed his first band, the "Cool Notes," at seventeen while living in Okinawa. Andrew's significant role as the musical director of Big Brother persisted until his illness in early 2015. His impactful career spanned psychedelic guitar work, collaborations with Janis Joplin, and contributions to Woodstock's 40th-anniversary concert. Tragically, he passed away in San Francisco on February 12, 2015, following complications from open-heart surgery.
